COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Northridge Defeats Irvine for 8th Victory in a Row

Oliver Heitmann had 23 kills and Jon Baer added 21 as fifth-ranked Cal State Northridge defeated 12th-ranked UC Irvine, 10-15, 15-8, 12-15, 16-14, 15-9, Saturday in a Mountain-Pacific Sports Federation volleyball match at Irvine.

The Matadors (13-5, 10-4) won their eighth consecutive match.

Leland Quinn had a school-record 50 kills for the Anteaters.

MEN’S TRACK

Bakersfield Invitational--Isaac Turner of Glendale College timed 1 minute 50.55 seconds to win the 800 meters and break a 31-year-old school record in the meet at Bakersfield College.

Turner’s mark broke the previous mark of 1:50.7, set by Bob Blanchard in 1964.

SOFTBALL

CS Northridge 2-4, Southern Utah 0-1--Kathy Blake-Small (8-3) threw a four-hitter and struck out six in the opener, and Christina Baioa (6-1) pitched a three-hitter and struck out six in the second game of the Western Athletic Conference doubleheader.

BASEBALL

Pierce 6, Canyons 3--Dave Supple’s two-run single in the fifth put the Brahmas ahead, 4-3, in a Western State Conference South Division game at Pierce.

Brandon Nickens pitched four scoreless innings of relief and earned his fourth save for the Brahmas (11-11, 7-1).

Ventura 1, Oxnard 0--Jamal Nichols made a diving catch with runners on second and third in the ninth inning to preserve the WSC North Division victory for Ventura (10-6-1, 4-3) at Oxnard.
