A woman diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic who donned black clothes before firing a shotgun at six Chinatown schoolchildren last year was sentenced Monday to 16 months in prison.

Charlotte De La Torre, 32, pleaded guilty in December to a single count of discharging a firearm with gross negligence in the May 23 incident, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Jeff McGrath.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lawrence W. Crispo ordered De La Torre to begin serving the prison term immediately.

McGrath said De La Torre will be released in several months because she was credited for time served since her arrest the day of the shooting.

De La Torre originally was charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon for firing at the students at Castellar Elementary School

No one was injured, but police said the shots came close to hitting two 12-year-olds. A rifle and shotgun were confiscated from De La Torre’s home.
