Re “Dole Mounts Drive to Repeal Gun Ban,” March 18:
What a shock! Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) has elected to have the National Rifle Assn. finance his presidential campaign. By writing to let them know he will lift the present sensible ban on assault weapons, he has put all law enforcement officers and American citizens in constant danger. Hunters do not use semiautomatic guns to hunt. The only purpose of semiautomatics is to kill people, lots of people at a time, quickly and efficiently. Allowing them to be imported and sold in the U.S. has very definitely increased their illegal usage on the streets of America.
He has shown an absolute disregard for the feelings and safety of Americans; his only concern seems to be how effectively he can pander to the NRA and how quickly he can get their campaign dollars.

This must be a low point in the history of American politics--a Senate majority leader forcing a blatant campaign contribution payoff to the NRA down the throats of Americans who have repeatedly in poll after poll pleaded for more, not less, gun control.
I am a lifelong moderate Republican looking to jump ship, with no land in sight.

It would be very interesting to learn what the NRA or selected influential members promised to Dole’s presidential hope chest to produce such a disappointing and foolish switch of his position on the assault weapons ban.
