Share

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of Earth Day, the San Fernando Valley Audubon Society has organized a cleanup of the wildlife areas of the Sepulveda Basin in Van Nuys on Saturday.

The cleanup of litter that has found its way into the basin during the winter floods and of weeds that strangle plants native to the area will begin at 8 a.m. at the north end of the wildlife reserve, according to Audubon spokeswoman Pamela Huffman. The cleanup, which will also cover Haskell Creek, will end at 3 p.m., she said.

The society also will offer nature walks of the wildlife reserve from 11 a.m. to noon.

Attendees are advised to wear sturdy, comfortable shoes and to bring sunscreen and hats. For serious environmentalists, gardening gloves, wading boots, hoes and loppers are recommended. Drinking water and a lunch are suggested, Huffman said. If rain is heavy, the cleanup will be postponed until April 8. For inquiries, call (818) 783-4293.
