Judge Andrew Hauk
If your report (“Federal Suit Over DDT Dumping Is Dismissed,” March 23) is accurate, then U.S. District Judge A. Andrew Hauk owes it to the nation, and to California, to excuse himself from any further judgments on cases involving environmental law. He also owes the environmental community an apology for his ill-considered and inflammatory words.
Judge Hauk’s decision to dismiss the suit is described in the report as “stunning.” It is that, and more: outrageous, biased, improper and wrong. His behavior is a clear violation of judicial ethics. He should retire before he does any more damage. If he will not, then he should be barred from hearing any more environmental actions, since his words and actions demonstrate a clear anti-environmental bias.

Hooray for Judge Hauk. When DDT was banned, it was for political, not scientific, reasons. Before its ban, DDT saved millions of human lives (mostly from malaria) and was widely used because of its low toxicity to humans.
