‘The Actor’ Disappoints

Share

We are writing to express our disappointment in the design of “The Actor” statuette given out at the Screen Actors Guild awards (Calendar, Feb. 27). Actually, we were quite offended by it, both as women and as members of the guild. The execution was lovely, but by choosing such a strikingly male figure to represent the members of this union, the guild inadvertently epitomized the obstacles faced by every woman in this industry . . . in particular, the problem of omission.

Each time the award was presented, we found ourselves further agitated by the image. It felt as if our noses were being rubbed in the fact of male dominance of our profession.
