Class Aids Latinas

Legally, every case is expected to be treated differently, every medical case is also known to be distinct. Why is it that in education every student is perceived to be the same? One must understand that cultural backgrounds are indeed very strong with different emphasis, beliefs and viewpoints on issues brought forth within our everyday lives here in the United States. Without an understanding of the Latino culture, many are quick to question why there should be a special math class to assist Latinas at Rancho Santiago College.

It is a glaring statistic that the greatest dropout rate at RSC is that of Latina students. Reasons are known but not acknowledged. Race and segregation are not the issue here, advancement and success are.

Latinas not only fight racial allegations but also fight their documented historical vicious cycle of the Latina stereotype at home. These courses are not focused on teaching them to cook, have children or enhance their desires to belong to gangs, but rather to succeed in the real world. For those who are unable to rationalize this issue, let me end with this question: Would we rather pay through our taxes to support uneducated Latinas or would we rather see them excel in college?
