The pace was wrong, the shots were not falling, but Saturday, when the UCLA Bruins left the floor, bandaged and exhausted, their march was still going, with one last step to take.

Faced with an Oklahoma State team determined to drag them into a deliberate, ball-control style, the Bruins slipped out of their graceful style, then scrambled, crawled and muscled their way into Monday’s NCAA men’s basketball championship game, 74-61, at the Kingdome. They will play the Arkansas Razorbacks, a 75-68 winner over North Carolina.

“It feels good, but it’s still kind of an empty feeling,” said senior forward Ed O’Bannon. “We want to fulfill it all Monday.”

Until the last moments of the game, UCLA never was able to break loose from the Cowboys, who were within one point, 62-61, and had the momentum seemingly on their side. But UCLA held Oklahoma State scoreless for the last 2 minutes 35 seconds. Tyus Edney sealed the victory with four consecutive flying drives.

“Coach (Jim Harrick) told me to be aggressive,” said Edney, who had 21 points and five assists.
