PAST IS BACK: If it’s nostalgia you want, Watson’s Drugs on the Circle in Orange was built in 1899, and its soda fountain is from the 1940s, a time when Tex Beneke was popular with big band music. Beneke, now 81, was at Watson’s on Tuesday, shooting a commercial for the city’s Art & Music Festival May 6-7, where his band will play. It’s a 50th anniversary celebration of the post-war era. . . . Says Watson’s owner Scott Parker on Beneke: “It was like meeting somebody you assume is in your past. A lot of these people, you don’t know they still perform.”

HORSE ART: There are more public sculptures in Orange County than you’d think (E1), and now there’s one more--a 28-inch tall riderless horse in bronze atop a pedestal at the Mission San Juan Capistrano. . . . It was placed there by the Portola Riders, the group of civic and business leaders who annually retrace the route of Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola through southern Orange County. . . . Titled “Empty Saddles,” it’s a memorial to the group’s “fallen compadres.”

LADY’S FLOWERS: What is a garden party without a touch of British aristocracy? Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill--her great-uncle was Winston Churchill--will appear Friday night to kick off the weekend garden show at the Crystal Court in Costa Mesa. She knows something about flowers: She’s an interior decorator with a new book “Classic Decorative Details.” . . . Her preview appearance is for a benefit for the Art Institute of Southern California in Laguna Beach.

NO NOSE NOISE? If you snore--or more likely, if the person you sleep with does--you might be interested in a free seminar in Laguna Hills Wednesday: “Snore No More.” It’s at the Ortho Sleep Center and co-sponsored by Western Medical Center-Anaheim. . . . Teresa Brenner, a coordinator with its Sleep Disorder Center, says most snoring can be eliminated with medical treatment. “Sometimes very minor treatment can take care of it,” she says.
