Witness’ Late Recall Brings Sentence in ’71 Drowning

KITTANNING, Pa. —
An ex-convict was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison Tuesday for a drowning that a witness said he suddenly recalled more than 20 years after the crime.
Franklin Crawford, 49, was convicted of second-degree murder Feb. 17 in the 1971 death of Pearl Mae Altman. The 21-year-old woman was beaten and thrown into the Allegheny River in Kittanning, about 35 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
Crawford denied knowing anything about the crime.
