DOWNEY : Signs Serve Warning to Gun, Drug Violators

Share

Downey has added its name to a growing list of Southeast-area cities that have decided to post signs warning that anyone convicted of breaking gun or drug laws near a school faces stiffer penalties.

The signs, which identify areas known as drug- and weapon-free zones, call attention to state laws that add up to seven years of jail time to the sentences of anyone convicted of violating firearms or weapons laws within 1,000 feet of a school campus.

Downey plans to post the signs this summer at each public school. The signs will cost about $2,500.
