Getting Showmobile on the Road

Who: The Professional Longboard Assn.

Contribution: The association has volunteered to repair, refurbish and repaint the city’s mobile stage, known as the Showmobile. The stage was vandalized recently. In exchange, the association will be able to use the Showmobile for its events.

IRVINE

Donation to Help Students Go On-Line

Who: Steeve Kay, a parent at Alderwood Elementary School in Irvine.

Contribution: Kay donated $5,000 to Alderwood Elementary School in Irvine to complete the electronic reference center in the school’s media center. Last year, Kay donated $10,000 to the school for the purchase of computer equipment. Students using the computer reference center will be able to tap into outside electronic databases and also access information with CD-ROM software.

Church Gives Single Parents a Boost

Who: The Church of Religious Science.

Contribution: The church recently donated $500 to the city’s Project Self-Proficiency, a program to help single parents become financially independent by improving their education and job skills. The donation will be used for child-care assistance. The program also received $380 in gift certificates for food from the Huntington Beach-Fountain Valley Board of Realtors.

Volunteers needed:

* The Wellness Community of Orange County is seeking volunteers for its Santa Ana office. Volunteers do light typing and answer phones during daytime hours. The Wellness Community is a support program for cancer patients and their families. Information is available from Alice Vlahos at (714) 258-1210.

* Huntington Beach is looking for two people who have extensive financial experience or an interest in municipal budgets to serve on the Finance Board. There are two vacancies on the seven-member panel. The board reviews and makes recommendations regarding fiscal policies, the annual financial audit, debt management, capital improvement plans, long-term financial plans and proposed state and federal legislation that impacts the city’s finances.
