Call-Box Help for Hearing-Impaired

Help for hearing-impaired Ventura County drivers could be on the way.

A plan to install special keyboards in emergency roadside call boxes was presented to the Ventura County Transportation Commission on Friday.

Since August, U. S. Commlink has tested five of the specially equipped boxes at heavily used emergency phones throughout the county.

Each keyboard is hooked up with a small computer-type screen and the telephone, so that hearing-impaired drivers in distress can communicate their needs to emergency workers.

“The response has been very positive,” U. S. Commlink spokesman Dean Smith told the commission.

The panel agreed to consider at a later meeting installing the devices in call boxes throughout the county.
