IRVINE VALLEY COLLEGE

Orange Groves Open to Public for Picking

College orange groves are open to the public for annual orange picks from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through May 21. The campus is at Jeffrey Road and Irvine Center Drive.

Oranges cost 15 cents a pound. Proceeds go to the Associated Students of Irvine Valley College and various student clubs. The Irvine Valley College Honor Society raised about $200 for scholarships and club activities at a recent pick.

The college has held the spring pick for the past eight years. There are about 4,500 orange trees scattered across the 100-acre campus.

Foundation Adds 2 Directors to Board

Two Orange County business executives, Tino Romero of La Palma and Ricky Yanagiuchi of Irvine, were recently appointed to the Cypress College Foundation Board of Directors.

Romero, president of Flightline Industries in La Palma, is a business administration graduate of the University of Tulsa, Okla. He is a member of the La Palma Intercommunity Hospital Foundation Board and the La Palma Advisory Committee, and is a past director of the La Palma Chamber of Commerce.

Yanagiuchi, vice president of Matsushita Electric Corp. of America in Cypress, holds a degree in international commerce from a university in Nishinomiya, Japan. He is chairman of the Japan Business Assn. of Orange County and is a director of the Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

ORANGE COAST COLLEGE

Construction Students Win Design Prize

A building design created by four Orange Coast College construction technology students has captured first prize in a competition sponsored by the Home Builders Council.

Winners are Ed Sealock of Newport Beach, Bill Va Verka and Jason Hendrix of Costa Mesa, and Shane Struhs of Fountain Valley.

The 8-by-10-foot structure, which the Orange Coast students call “the world’s smallest woodworking shop,” will be built by each community college team entered in the sixth annual Design-Build Competition April 22 and 23 at Tustin Market Place.

Completed structures will be judged by a panel of building industry professionals. Students from regional occupational programs and from high schools also will compete.

Full-Scholarship Applicants Sought

The Newport Beach- based California Assn. of Private Post-secondary Schools is accepting applications for full-tuition scholarships to private colleges and career schools in the state.

The scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors and to adults.
