Mac Clones Due in May: The first company to clone Apple’s computers will begin selling the machines next month at a 20% discount to the originals. The Macintosh clones are made by Power Computing Corp., a small Silicon Valley start-up company led by the designer of a leading IBM clone in the 1980s. They will be sold by mail order. “Our strategy is more for less,” said Stephen Kahng, Power Computing’s chief executive. Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple Computer Inc. opened the doors to Mac cloners last year in a move designed to boost its share of the global personal computer market, which is now about 8%. Prices for desktop Mac clones will range from $1,995 to $2,899, excluding the monitor.
