AGOURA HILLS : City Trying to Count Cell Phone Users
Agoura Hills officials are trying to determine how many cellular telephone users there are in the city in order to implement a utility tax approved last year.
The city is working with AirTouch Cellular, an Irvine-based company that provides cellular telephone service to much of Southern California, said Elaine Graves, the city’s director of finance.
The city, she said, will provide the company with data on street names and block numbers, which the company will match against its list of customers.
Based on a tax rate of 3 1/2%, the average cellular telephone user will pay about $1.58 cents more per month on the bills, Graves said.
Most cellular telephone customers, she said, won’t see the increase for at least a month, depending on the companies’ billing cycles.
Along with a tax on telephones, the Agoura Hills City Council last summer approved a tax on gas and electricity to close what city officials said was an anticipated $1 million budget gap.
