Clothes Don’t Tell the Complete Story

Share

* In response to your April 13 article, “Anti-Gang Unit Catches Flak,” I have lived in the Colonia for 36 years. My children prefer living in this area more than any other area in Oxnard. They are straight kids. But I have to dress my boys a certain way so that they don’t get flak.

Even so, a police officer observed my kids playing basketball in the front yard and drove right up to them. He stopped and questioned my kids. Why? Do the police actually have the right to badger anyone they please?

One officer commented on how my son was confused whether he was a homie or a tagger. Is this what it’s coming to? Do they all have to be categorized into one unit or another?

Another time, my boys decided to go catch lizards out in the back fields of Colonia. Again, the police claimed that the kids were taggers and took their pictures. Now my kids feel that no matter what, they will be harassed in the city of Oxnard.

You tell me, city of Oxnard: How do you want me to dress my children?
