Three large phone companies reported first-quarter profit increases Tuesday, citing steady growth in demand for new lines and services.

In addition, Sprint Corp., chiefly a provider of long-distance service, said it had a 9% jump in profit, not counting an extraordinary boost in the first three months of 1994.

SBC Communications Inc. said earnings rose 10% despite a decline in the value of its investment in Telefonos de Mexico, Mexico’s national telecommunications firm, which has been hurt by the peso currency crisis.

GTE Corp.’s profit rose nearly 9%, and US West Inc. reported a 2% increase when gains from some asset sales are included.
