AMR Corp., parent of American Airlines, the nation’s largest carrier, Wednesday reported a first-quarter profit, contrasted with a loss a year ago, and cited strict cost controls and a strong performance by its computer reservations unit.

AMR said it earned $38 million, or 48 cents a share, in the quarter, contrasted with a loss of $7 million, or 30 cents a share, in the 1994 period. Sales rose 4%, to $3.97 billion from $3.81 billion.
