Share

Long Beach police have announced a new program in which retired people would volunteer to help officers with various duties, including follow-up contact with older victims of crime.

Dubbed “Senior Police Partners,” the six-month pilot program is scheduled to be in operation this summer, said Karen Kerr, a spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department.

Under the program, two senior volunteers will be assigned to work at least eight hours a week with each of the various community policing teams. Retirees 55 years or older wishing to volunteer for the program should contact police by April 28 at (310) 570-7034. They should have a valid California driver’s license, be in good health and live in Long Beach, Kerr said. Participants will be chosen the second week of June and will receive 40 hours of training, Kerr said.
