IRVINE : Recall Leader Files Corrected Petitions

Share

The leader of a recall drive aimed at three City Council members submitted corrected recall petitions to the city clerk’s office Wednesday, hoping to begin signature gathering at local shopping centers this weekend.

Former Democratic congressional candidate Gary Kingsbury said a few “technical” corrections were required by City Clerk Judy Vonada. She must approve the petition forms before the recall drive can begin.

Kingsbury formed the Irvine Recall Committee, which has targeted Mayor Michael Ward and council members Barry Hammond and Paula Werner.

They were singled out for approving a plan last summer to borrow $62 million to make an additional investment in the county’s now-failed investment pool.

But council members say that Moody’s and other top bond rating agencies assured the city the investment was safe. Council members Christina L. Shea and Greg Smith voted against the plan.

Recall proponents must gather signatures of 15% or 9,000 of the city’s 60,000 registered voters within 160 days to qualify for a recall election.

The recall committee will hold a public meeting at 7 p.m. Friday at the Irvine Ranch Water District Duck Club to plan for the signature drive.
