Oxnard : Committee to Raise Cash for School Pool

Share

Parents and educators who would like to see an Olympic-sized pool built at the new Oxnard High School have formed a committee and are beginning to raise money toward their goal.

The Oxnard Aquatic Foundation announced Wednesday that it planned to raise $1.5 million by Sept. 1 to pay for the pool at the Oxnard High campus under construction on Gonzales Road.

The old campus is scheduled to close in June.

Although the Oxnard Union High School District Board of Education has approved construction of a 50-meter swimming pool at the new campus, the district lacks the money to pay for it.

That means Oxnard High swim team members will have to continue to practice in an aging pool at the 5th Street campus unless a new pool is built, supporters of the swim program have said.

Organizers of the fund-raising campaign said they hope to open the new pool by next February. They will make a presentation to the school board Wednesday. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
