TERROR IN OKLAHOMA CITY : National Day of Mourning

Share

President Clinton issued a formal proclamation setting aside Sunday as a National Day of Mourning, asking Americans “to pay homage to the memory of those lost in the Oklahoma City tragedy and to pray for them and their community.” The President and his wife, Hillary, will attend a memorial service Sunday afternoon in Oklahoma City at the state fairgrounds. They’ll be joined by Oklahoma Gov. and Mrs. Frank Keating and Evangelist Billy Graham.

Baylee’s Mom

The image of 1-year-old Baylee Almon, limp in a firefighter’s arms, flashed around the world as a symbol of the horror of the bombing. After her identity and fate--she died not long after the picture was taken--became known, Baylee’s mother, Aren, came forward to show the world how deeply she had suffered. “If they do catch these criminals, maybe they’ll see this and see how much they’ve hurt me, and hurt my family and hurt other people,” she told an Oklahoma TV station. “They destroyed our lives, and our homes.” The 22-year-old single parent was working her second day as a clerk at an insurance company when the bomb detonated. And Baylee had celebrated her first birthday the day before.
