WATTS : Peace Day Festival, Talent Show Today

The daughter of Malcolm X will be among the speakers scheduled to talk about progress in Watts and South-Central Los Angeles since the 1992 riots at a Peace Day festival and talent show today.

The event is sponsored by Building Up Los Angeles and will be from noon to 6 p.m. at the Kedren Community Health Center, 710 E. 111th Place.

Building Up Los Angeles is a nonprofit community service organization funded by the AmeriCorps national service program. Organizers say the mission of Building Up Los Angeles is to work to improve education, public safety, health care and the environment in inner-city neighborhoods.

Malika Shabazz, daughter of Malcolm X, will speak as will leaders of local community organizations on improved social conditions in Watts and South-Central since the riots.

Entertainment will include poetry readings and African drum music. In addition, baked goods and other food items will be sold.

Children are invited to have their faces painted and participate in painting images of peace in their neighborhood on two large canvases. Fifteen participants, including dance and music acts, will participate in the talent show, which begins at 3 p.m.
