WESTLAKE : Law Day to Focus on Immigration Issues

Share

High school students from throughout the city will discuss immigration issues with community leaders and legal professionals Saturday in the 25th annual Youth Summit/Law Day Conference at Belmont High School.

Students will explore how immigration connects with other issues, such as diversity and public safety, in workshops with attorneys and business professionals.

They will discuss the legal, social and economic implications of proposed solutions to the challenges of immigration, including such ideas as national databases and identity cards for legal workers.

Organized by the Constitutional Rights Foundation, this is the first Law Day conference to be held at a local high school, said Lisa Friedman, director of public affairs for the foundation.

Previous conferences have been held at the Los Angeles County Courthouse. A different topic is discussed each year.

“We get kids from East L.A., West L.A. and South-Central who have never had the opportunity to discuss issues together before,” Friedman said. “As the day progresses, they get more comfortable being out of the classroom and become more expressive.”

The conference is co-sponsored by the Los Angeles County Bar Assn., the city of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Daily Journal.

Belmont High School is at 1575 W. 2nd St. The conference begins at 9 a.m. and lasts until 1:30 p.m.

Those interested in attending may contact Ieshia Black at the Constitutional Rights Foundation, (213) 487-5590.
