Ex-Maryland Lobbyist Is Sentenced and Fined
Maryland’s former top lobbyist was sentenced to six months of work release for overbilling clients and funneling the money to political candidates.
Bruce Bereano also was fined $20,000 during Friday’s sentencing hearing and ordered to perform 500 hours of community service. His lawyers immediately appealed, and U.S. District Judge William Nickerson suspended the sentence pending the outcome.
A federal jury convicted Bereano in November of seven counts of mail fraud for falsely billing four clients for about $16,000 in “legislative entertainment expenses” from May, 1990, to June, 1991.
