SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

UC Irvine’s Borya Orloff broke a long-standing school pole vault record Saturday in winning the competition at the Steve Scott Track and Field Invitational at UC Irvine.

Orloff’s vault of 17 feet 2 3/4 inches broke the previous Anteater record of 17-1 1/2, set in 1976 by Mike Sabatino. A freshman, Orloff cleared the height on his first attempt, but failed to clear the next height of 17-6 3/4.

“It feels pretty old,” said Sabatino, a spectator at the meet, of his record. “It seems like it should have been broken a long time ago, with the favorable tailwinds at this field.”

Orloff, who has jumped 17-5 in practice, needs a provisional qualifying mark of 17-4 1/2 to participate in the NCAA championships in May. A leap of 18-1 1/4 will automatically qualify him.

As a senior at Bellflower St. John Bosco, Orloff took second in the State finals. He hopes to qualify for the Olympic trials in 1996, needing a jump of 18-4.

“I kind of came out of nowhere,” Orloff said. “I knew I would (break the record) today. I was told (Sabatino) was coming today and that pumped me up.”

Another impressive performance came in the women’s javelin, where Nicole Carroll of the San Mateo Track Club, posted the best mark in the nation this year with a throw of 205-10. Carroll, from Fresno State, improved on her best mark this season by more than 16 feet.

Ruth Wysocki, a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic team in the 1,500 meters, easily outdistanced the field in the 800 and 1,500 races. In the 800, Wysocki beat the second-place finisher Holiday Molway, running unattached, by more than 11 seconds, finishing in 2:04.31. Three hours later, she again blew away the 1,500 field in a time of 4:18.12. Last week at the Mt. SAC Relays she won in 4:16.

In the men’s 400 intermediate hurdles, David Mayeda of Irvine took first with a time of 52.49. Mayeda, a University High standout, won the Big West championship last year, finishing in 51.09. Mayeda also anchored the Anteater 1,600 relay, which won in 3:24.65. Irvine trailed Cal State Fullerton’s team until the final leg, when Mayeda came from behind for the victory.

Edith Ingram from New Mexico State, whose team arrived late, threw the shotput with the men and won the women’s event with an effort of 42-0.
