Getting a Bead on Creativity

Share

In the nine years since Ascona Beads opened its doors in Santa Monica, the store has given customers a creative outlet.

Classes and supplies for beading, wiring and designing--a good part of the realm of jewelry making--can be found in the store that local artists consider one-of-a-kind for its broad selection.

The main focus is beads. The shop sells beads from around the world that are made from crystal, bone, glass and horn materials. These materials can be used to create such items as earrings, bracelets and necklaces.

The 1,500 square-foot store is a simple-looking, comfortable place with a generous work area that houses large folding tables and chairs. The walls are lined with hundreds of decorative beads in all shapes, sizes and colors. And, the prices are just as varied--a single bead sells anywhere from 1 cent to $40.

“This is the best bead store,” said Joanna Curtis, a Santa Monica resident and longtime customer. “It’s a great place for women who are interested in beads and jewelry to get together and share.”

Ascona Beads is an ideal place to spend a day taking a class and working on a creation. The store offers an array of classes from bead basics to earring making. Taught by local artists, classes are held on most weekends but registration is necessary. Fees average $30 and include lunch.

Co-owners Ricki Pecker and Barbara Berkowitz pride themselves on promoting a stress-free environment where customers can relax and learn at the same time.

“We keep an atmosphere where people feel comfortable,” said Berkowitz. “Our customers work all week so when they come here, they should enjoy the classes.”
