City Inaugurates New Masonic Park

Fillmore officials have inaugurated the city’s fifth park.

The Masonic Park, at the corner of Central and Sespe avenues, was dedicated this week to the people of the community for providing their services, land and materials to build the park.

“Everything was provided to the community,” said Shirley Spitler, a business assistant coordinator for Fillmore. “Once we got the land, everything turned into a snowball effect. Everybody was helping.”

The quarter-acre lot was donated by the Fillmore and Santa Paula Masonic lodges shortly after the Northridge earthquake, which destroyed a Masonic temple at the site.

The city had needed to relocate a gazebo that had been sitting at the city’s Central Park after a decision not to use that location to build a new city hall.

With the help of residents, the city moved the gazebo to the new park and with donations of money and services, renovated the gazebo and landscaped the park’s land. The gazebo was often used for weddings and as a podium for speakers during large public events.
