Digital, Microsoft Expanding Software Deal: Digital Equipment Corp. said it is expanding an alliance with Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft Corp. in personal computer operating systems software to keep its VAX large-computer users as well as court new customers. “This is a major expansion of an ongoing alliance with Microsoft,” Wes Melling, Digital’s vice president for OpenVMS business said. Under the alliance, to be detailed today at a Digital users meeting in Washington, Digital will sell its OpenVMS operating system for VAXs and Alpha client/server systems with Microsoft’s Windows NT personal computer operating system. Previously, Maynard, Mass.-based Digital sold OpenVMS and Windows NT separately. Melling said selling them together will help large Digital corporate users build new personal computer applications.
