Chiron Posts $385.8-Million Loss: The Emeryville, Calif.-based biotechnology company said the loss was due largely to acquisition costs and research and development expenses. Chiron Corp.’s quarterly loss came to $9.64 a share, contrasted with a profit of $4.8 million, or 14 cents a share, in the same period a year ago. Revenue grew to $218.2 million from $91.4 million. First-quarter 1995 results included $349 million in charges for acquisitions and research and development. The charges included $270 million for a Chiron-Ciba partnership that acquired Ciba Corning and Ciba’s interests in Biocine Co. and Biocine SpA and $27 million for the purchase of the Iolab surgical division of Johnson & Johnson.
