NO STAMPS NEEDED: It’s usually just Christmas time you leave something for your mail carrier. But this Saturday, the U.S. Postal Service will ask you for a bonus: Any canned goods--or other non-perishable foods--you can give. Just leave it at your mailbox. . . . “It’s the largest single food drive in history,” says postal spokeswoman Terri Bouffiou. Charity food bins also will be set up at local post offices. Last year, mail carriers nationwide came back with 32 million tons of food.

WALKING CAUSE: Besides food, a job and a home, what many homeless people need most is footwear. Last year, the county’s Podiatric Medical Assn. collected 5,000 pairs of used shoes. Now the group is back at it. . . . The Episcopal Service Alliance says its group alone aids about 4,000 homeless children each year, and that most wear undersized or inadequate shoes that cause foot and ankle problems. . . . You can drop off shoes this month at any podiatrist’s office or any Walking Store.

UBIQUITOUS? Hugh Hewitt is already co-host of a public TV talk show, has his own radio show, is a partner in the Newport Beach law firm of Hewitt & McGuire, is newly appointed to the West Coast Air Quality Management District board and is in demand as a political analyst on the speakers’ circuit. Now he’s just been named a full-time professor at Chapman University’s new law school. And Hewitt says he isn’t giving up any of his other jobs. He’ll teach torts and develop the law journal for the Anaheim-based law school, which starts classes in the fall. . . . Why an added job? Hewitt responds: “I love teaching.”

MOM SQUAD: Balboa Peninsula’s Mary Jo Phillips and a camerawoman neighbor--known only as Mom 2X--are now cult attractions on local access cable with their own year-old show, “Two Moms and a Camera” (E1). Armed with a home video camera, the two mothers (with three kids each) have raided buffet lines, crashed parties, chased down cops for dates and crawled through doughnut shop takeout windows on the show. . . . . Their rationale? Says Mom 2X: “All we are is two people who hate to clean; we go out and have a good time.”
