David A. Grant, president of Orange Coast College, announced Tuesday that he will retire in December after 32 years on the staff.

“Having come to Orange Coast at the age of 25 to teach history, I have concluded that more than three decades is probably enough, and that it would be appropriate for me to retire at the end of the fall semester,” Grant said in a letter to the staff.

Grant, 57, of Newport Beach also is an Orange Coast graduate.

He labeled his six-year presidency a “labor of love,” but said the 12- to 15-hour days, six days per week, have taken a toll.

“It is true that the time flies by, and that surely means the duties are pleasurable, but it leaves little time to spend with other commitments, to write personal letters, to work in the garden, to sail and swim, to volunteer, and to take the dog for long walks,” he wrote.
