The Secret Service closed the lane of traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue nearest the White House late Tuesday afternoon in the most visible tightening of presidential security since the Oklahoma City bombing.

“One lane of Pennsylvania Avenue is being closed down,” said Secret Service spokesman David Adams.

Asked if the shutdown is permanent or temporary, Adams said: “It’s a strong, permanent, temporary shutdown.”

The lane was closed with a long procession of wooden barricades hung with streamers of yellow plastic tape bearing the words in black print: “Police Line Do Not Cross.”

Four Secret Service cars were parked in the closed lane between the barricades and the concrete, chain-linked bollards installed on the sidewalk as a security measure several years ago.

The permanent closing of all six lanes of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the executive mansion is a central recommendation of a draft report of the panel that has been reviewing White House security.
