Thomas Connor O’Laughlin, a 15-year Oxnard resident, died Wednesday after a long illness. He was 78.

O’Laughlin owned the Standard Flour Co. of Los Angeles with his four brothers.

He took over the company about 45 years ago after a brief stint as a professional baseball player with a farm team for the St. Louis Cardinals. He also enjoyed playing amateur football and golf in his younger years.

Mary Ann O’Laughlin, his wife of 21 years, described her husband as a good-humored Irishman who loved to travel during his later life.

“He was humorous in a quiet, Irish sort of way,” she said. “And he was a good husband.”

The couple moved to an Oxnard beach house in 1980, when Thomas O’Laughlin retired.

He is survived by his wife and two sisters, Bernadette Bechdolt and Patricia Marsh. Funeral arrangements are being handled by James A. Reardon Mortuary in Oxnard.
