NCAA SOFTBALL : Brundage Homer Leads UCLA

Jennifer Brundage hit a two-run home run in the third inning to spark No. 2 UCLA (44-6) to an 8-0 victory over Campbell University of North Carolina (47-24) in the first round of NCAA regional play at Columbia, S.C. The game was ended after five innings because of the NCAA’s eight-run rule.

With her home run, Brundage set the school record with 20 in her career, surpassing Yvonne Gutierrez, who hit 19 from 1989-1992. Brundage also holds the record for home runs in a season with 14 this year.

Kaci Clark threw a one-hitter and struck out six for UCLA.

UCLA plays Hawaii (46-19), a 3-2 first-round winner over South Carolina (52-20), in a second-round game today.

In a regional at Cal State Northridge, Scia Maumausolo hit a home run in the fifth inning for the go-ahead run and Northridge (42-15) held on to defeat Missouri (47-18), 2-1.

Cal State Fullerton (43-16) scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Illinois State (45-13), 9-1, in a game that was ended because of the eight-run rule.
