Preacher’s Apology for Anti-Semitic Slurs Not Acceptable
In your article on the Christian Coalition’s Ralph Reed (“Ralph Reed: Onward Christian Soldier,” May 1) you mention, “He essentially apologized for anti-Semitic slurs made by Christian evangelicals.”
However, none of those preachers authorized any apology. Indeed, many of them still spread their hatred against anyone who has a contrary religious or political belief.
The only true apology would be if Pat Buchanan himself said, “I was wrong and I should not have said such things.”
Pat Robertson should tell us, “Your beliefs regarding God, sin and social justice are as valid as mine.” I do not want to hear that their words were taken out of context; their contexts have been thoroughly explored.
I do not want to hear that they were misunderstood; they used simple, unambiguous phrases to spread their bigotry against diversity.
Most of all, I do not want some surrogate to apologize when he does not have the power to stop further anti-Semitic remarks from those he defends.
