DANA POINT : Alternative Prom Termed a Success
An organizer of an alternative Dana Hills High School prom that competed with a school-sanctioned prom last week said that he and a partner lost money but drew about 325 couples.
“We didn’t make money off of it, but it was an extremely successful event,” said Nick Green, an alumnus of Dana Hills High who with senior David Bailey put on the alternative event.
The competing proms had divided students and some faculty members at the high school. The two affairs were held Friday night in Anaheim and Newport Beach.
A student representative on the Capistrano Unified School District board said Tuesday that the school-sanctioned prom was a success, drawing 215 couples.
Green and Bailey said a school official had asked them not to hold their prom, which charged $60 versus the $80 for the official school prom.
Before they decided to organize their event, Green and Bailey, who operate Conquest Enterprises, had sought to provide disc jockey services at the official prom but had been rejected by the school.
Green said he and Bailey would try to work with schools next year before staging a prom on their own.
“We thought we’d get more kids,” Green said.
