AGOURA HILLS : City Will Ease Curbs on Business Signage

Share

Agoura Hills officials plan to amend the city’s sign ordinance to allow businesses to place wall signs on dormers and other high places on their buildings.

The amendment would clarify the existing code, which is vague on the subject, said Acting Community Development Director Mike Kamino. “Before, we were making interpretations on a case-by-case basis,” he said.

Along with allowing signs on dormers, the amended law would permit signs on parapets, the walls along the perimeter of a roof, used to hide unsightly equipment atop buildings.

The amended ordinance would not apply to freeway signs, which have been the subject of a dispute between the city and a group of 12 businesses, which sued the city over the right to have freeway signs after officials outlawed such placards as eyesores in 1984. The businesses contend that they need the signs to attract business and call the city’s position unreasonable.

Mayor Louise Rishoff said an amended wall sign ordinance would allow business more flexibility in posting signs while preserving the area’s scenic beauty.
