NORWALK : City Gets $2.5 Million for New Senior Center

The city has received a $2.5-million federal loan to build a new senior citizen center.

The allotment from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will help meet construction costs for the $4-million complex. City staff is also seeking state grants to fund the project.

Norwalk’s community of seniors has outgrown the existing 4,000-square-foot clubhouse at San Antonio Drive and Foster Road, officials said. The new center, planned for a redevelopment site at San Antonio and Orange Street, would be about 8,000 square feet.

Adeline Gragg, 71, who frequents the existing facility, said Norwalk senior citizens would like more space. “If we live to see it--great,” she said. “We’ve been hearing about it for a couple of years.”
