Oklahomans will be allowed to carry concealed handguns under a bill that sailed to final approval in the Legislature.

Gov. Frank Keating is expected to sign the measure, which would take effect Jan. 1. It passed 91 to 10 Tuesday in the House and 39 to 8 Monday in the Senate.

Proponents said the measure was necessary to allow citizens to protect themselves in an era of violent crime. Some opponents argued it would increase violence.
