The U.S. Navy said Thursday that it went to the rescue of an Iranian vessel stranded in the Persian Gulf for three days without food.

A Navy statement said a helicopter from the destroyer O’Brien sighted the small boat, with 10 crew members, 85 miles northeast of Bahrain on Wednesday.

The Iranian vessel had been on its way to Abadan, in southern Iran, from Dubai when the engine broke down. U.S. sailors repaired the engine and gave the crew food to last five days.

U.S.-Iran ties have deteriorated since Washington imposed trade sanctions against Tehran this month, reiterating a charge that Iran supports terrorism and is seeking to develop nuclear weapons.
