Share

The Oxnard and Port Hueneme police departments screened 839 vehicles during a jointly staffed sobriety checkpoint Thursday night, citing 18 drivers for license violations, towing eight cars and arresting two people for drunk driving.

The checkpoint, at Channel Islands Boulevard between M Street and Ventura Road, was conducted from 6 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., coinciding with dozens of other checkpoints throughout California.

The screening of motorists was part of an effort to reduce drunk driving-related crashes over the Memorial Day weekend.

It was dedicated to “the countless law enforcement officers who have been killed by drunk drivers and who, along with all peace officers killed in the line of duty, will be remembered in Memorial Day services throughout the state,” according to a written statement by the Oxnard Police Department.

Oxnard police have conducted five sobriety/license checkpoints this year, screening 4,318 vehicles, conducting 86 field sobriety tests, and arresting 24 people for driving under the influence. To date, 193 citations have been issued and 132 cars have been towed.

The checkpoints are funded with a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. They will continue to take place at least once a month.
