SANTA MONICA : Rally to Protest Water Act Changes Planned at Pier

Several environmental groups are planning a Memorial Day rally at Santa Monica Pier to protest proposed changes to the federal Clean Water Act.

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a revision of the 1972 law that would relax rules on treatment of ocean-bound sewage and sharply scale back protection of wetlands across the nation.

The new bill, which has the support of some business leaders, has drawn criticism from environmentalists who say it would set back years of anti-pollution efforts.

Rep. Jane Harman (D-Rolling Hills), who voted against the bill, is scheduled to join other speakers at the rally, which is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Monday.

Organizers want “to send a message to Washington that continued protection of our water and therefore our health is critically important to us,” said Larry Kopald, board chairman of the Earth Communications Office, which is co-sponsoring the event with American Oceans Campaign and other environmental groups.
