A Michigan man died when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a traffic sign and a newspaper stand on a city street, a California Highway Patrol officer said Tuesday.

Syed Haider, 32, was heading north on Tustin Avenue near 17th Street at about 6:45 p.m. Monday when he swerved into the fast lane and back into the right lane at about 30 m.p.h., CHP Officer Angel Johnson said. He lost control of his bike and fell, sliding 100 feet down the street into the “no parking” sign and a newspaper stand, she said.

Haider, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The traffic fatality was the only one in Orange County during the Memorial Day weekend, when 42 people were killed statewide according to preliminary figures from the CHP.

“No one else was hurt, luckily,” Johnson said. “It’s usually a busy street, but I guess with the holidays and all, there wasn’t too much going on at the time.”
