Pittsburgh Pro, Con

I do not know whether to be elated or distressed at the recent “discovery” of one of my favorite U.S. cities (“River City Revival,” May 7). Pittsburgh has always been a source of pride for me as a lifelong resident of Pennsylvania, although I grew up in the southeastern part of the state. I can only hope that future visitors will not wreak havoc upon the Iron City. I suggest that the best time to visit is in the fall, when the foliage is in full color and the air is crisp and cool. And for the best eats, try Primanti Brothers on the Strip, where a sandwich comes fully loaded with meat, French fries and coleslaw all between two thick slices of bread. Not to be missed!

I got a chuckle out of the article about Pittsburgh. I had the misfortune of visiting Pittsburgh in 1985 when it was No. 1 in the “Places Rated Almanac.” No. 1? In my opinion, Pittsburgh was the epitome of the Rust Belt. The roads were a maze of potholes, the park at the confluence of the three rivers was a sorry, littered mess and the overall impression was one of being in a land of “Oz,” where the wizard was a fake. Pittsburgh? If I never visit again, it will be too soon.
