Jessica Morrow, a fifth-grader at Willow Elementary School in Agoura Hills, has been named a top finalist in a poster competition sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District.

Her entry depicts a cloud with a caption reading, “You Can’t Depend On Me.” The local contest was arranged by the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District, which gets its water from the MWD.

Some 500 students entered the contest, from private and public schools in the Las Virgenes Unified School District. It was open to youngsters in the first through the sixth grades.

“We were delighted with both the scope and quality of this year’s entries,” said Jim Colbaugh, general manager of the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District. “Clearly, students are learning how and why to conserve water supplies.”

Runners-up were Ma’ayan Cohen, a fourth-grader at Chaparral Elementary in Calabasas; Justine Greene, a fourth-grader at Sumac Elementary in Agoura Hills; Erin Jones, a sixth-grader at St. Jude the Apostle School in Westlake Village, and Ashley Lane-Roberts, a second-grader at Bay Laurel Elementary in Calabasas. Also runners-up were Micaela McGurk, a fifth-grader at Lupin Hill Elementary in Calabasas; Rebecca Mines and Ashley Priesler, third-graders at Round Meadow School in Calabasas, and Danielle Schaeffer and Lindsey Daniel, fifth-graders at Willow Elementary.

Their posters will be sent to the MWD, where they will compete with other entries from schools throughout Southern California. Winning posters will be featured in an MWD water-preservation awareness calendar.
