Amgen Hires Takeover Specialist as Top Lawyer: The Thousand Oaks-based biotechnology company named George A. Vandeman its senior vice president and general counsel. Vandeman, who had headed the national mergers and acquisitions practice group at the law firm Latham & Watkins, handled a number of high-profile transactions in the 1980s, including defending Continental Airlines against a Frank Lorenzo bid and representing Ted Turner during an attempt to take over CBS and in Turner’s acquisition of the MGM-UA studios. Vandeman, 55, led the Latham & Watkins team that handled Amgen’s $262-million acquisition of Synergen Inc.
