CHICAGO — Former Clinton campaign manager David Wilhelm, who stepped down as Democratic national chairman after the party’s rout in November, jumped into the race Wednesday to succeed Democratic Sen. Paul Simon.
Wilhelm, 38, will face Richard J. Durbin, a seven-term congressman from Springfield and former Simon aide, in the March 19 primary. Durbin declared himself a candidate on Tuesday.
Simon announced in November that he is retiring in 1996.
