Juan Carlos Ongania; Former President of Argentina
Gen. Juan Carlos Ongania, 81, former president of Argentina who was installed by the military in 1966 and toppled in a 1970 coup. A hard-line anti-Communist who heavily censored the arts and the media, Ongania took office after the military ousted civilian President Arturo Illia. Four years later, he, too, was toppled after labor and student unrest. Ongania was placed under house arrest in February after accusing the government of corruption and predicting that social unrest would prevent President Carlos Menem from completing his six-year term. In Buenos Aires on Thursday of a heart attack.
